In 2008 Progressive Insurance had come up with a product idea that would eventually become Snapshot. The device would be an optional new way to measure insurance rates and discounts, based on driving information received from a "widget". It would be plugged into the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) port of a vehicle. Information measured would include rate of acceleration, deceleration, and speed.
What Progressive didn't have was a design for their new idea. After contacting the RISD Industrial Design department, eight teams were set up to come up with a design concept that accurately reflected Progressive's needs and customer research. Our team's concept was selected and would eventually become Snapshot, released to market in 2011.
